Leave the noise in the plains

Forty-five minutes from Panchkula the road begins to climb, the air turns cool and the phone goes quiet. MorniHaus is a private house on a green hillside, made for doing very little, beautifully: slow mornings as the mist lifts off the valley, long afternoons by the pool, and evenings by the fire under a sky full of stars.

No traffic. No hurry. Just the hills, and you.

The garden lawn and stone path seen from the house above, with the valley beyond

The house

Made for slow days and long evenings

Inside it is calm and bright: wood-panelled ceilings, glass doors onto the balconies, and the valley in almost every window. Outside, a winding stepping-stone path leads down past a pergola and a hanging egg chair to the fire pit and the pool.

After dark the pool lights up blue against the mural wall, which is the picture most guests take home.

MorniHaus began as an escape from a city life that moved too fast. We wanted somewhere the days slowed down, the air was clean and the phone could stay in a drawer, so we built the place we kept wishing we could run away to. Now we share it the way you'd open your home to a friend.

The pool

Float above the valley

The pool is yours alone. Loungers line one side; the other is a wall painted in loops of pink, green and blue. Beyond the rail the land drops away to the valley.

In the afternoon it's sun and water. At dusk the lights come on and the pool glows blue under the first stars.

The grounds

A garden that steps down the hill

A stepping-stone path winds from the house through the lawn, past the pergola and its egg swing chair, down to the fire pit. Sit out as the sky turns pink over the ridges and watch the valley go quiet.

The welcome committee

Meet Cookie & Brownie

Every great house in the hills needs a welcome committee. Ours has four legs each, opinions about belly rubs, and the best seats on the lawn. Bring your own pet too; they'll be glad of the company.

In the hills

Wander, or don't

Haryana's only hill station rises to about 1,220 metres. Most days here are best spent doing nothing at all. On the others, this is what's waiting just beyond the gate.

Lakes

Tikkar Taal

Twin lakes tucked between the hills, separated by a ridge. Go early, when the mist sits on the water, or take a slow boat out in the afternoon.

History

Morni Fort

A hilltop fort said to date back to Queen Morni, now a small forest museum with the widest views in the hills.

Walks

The forest trail

A two to three hour walk through the woods from Tikkar Taal up to the fort. Pack water, and take your time.

The summit

Karoh Peak

The highest point in Haryana, right on the Himachal border. About an hour's climb for a view that goes on for ever.

Wildlife

Birds of the Shivaliks

Peafowl, red junglefowl and kalij pheasant in the forest. Bring binoculars between November and February.

Monsoon

Hidden waterfalls

In the rains the hills turn emerald and seasonal waterfalls appear along the forest tracks.

Getting here, and around

Close enough to reach. Far enough to forget.

Approximate drive times from MorniHaus. The last stretch up the hill is narrow and winding, so arrive before dark.
